Pro-Muslim and anti-Muslim stances at the Literary Festival: It is strange to watch that the popular writers violate the code of decorum and start flaring-up with egoist outburst or emotions attacking other. The Mumbai Lit fest on 02-11-2912 (Friday) witnessed such a kind of major drama when veteran actor and theatre artist Girish Karnad slammed 2001 Nobel Prize laureate VS Naipaul[1] and called him anti-Muslim[2]. Karnad, who was present at the lit-fest on Friday to conduct a class on theatre, spoke at length about Naipaul. He said, “Now Mr Naipaul has written three books on India, three very big books and if you read them you will find that not one of them contains any reference to music. He has gone through the whole of India without responding to Indian music. Now I think that this only means that he is tone deaf. That’s my reading of the situation but then there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be tone deaf. He has no music and therefore no conception of what the Muslims contributed to our history. This concept of what the Muslims did in Indian history clearly shows that he has no idea of at least the music bit.” He also attacked Naipaul for his reported visit to BJP office after Babri mosque demolition in December 1992[3]. Dwelling on Naipaul’s anti-Islam stance in his writing, he said, “Given that music defines our daily existence… you find it in the streets, in the restaurants and so on… you would expect an exploration of India to comment on that.” It is not known how he had chosen the platform to vent out his ego to turn against Naipaul under the bogey of “anti-Muslim” stance, which was not at all relevant or subject of the Lit-Fest organized.

Music with the Saints of Bakti and Fakirs of Sufism[4]: Karnad said one had to understand different strains of music. The Bhakti and Sufi movements often overlapped. If one had to understand Indian culture, how Hindus and Muslims and the whole historical process reacted, one had to know music. “If you don’t know music, you cannot understand it, and I think this is, let me state right away at the beginning, this is one problem with Mr. Naipaul’s analysis of Indian culture.” Referring to the analysis of Indian culture and music by certain Indologists, Karnad said the whole matrix was already there — the foreigners came, they looked at Indian culture, they saw pristine Hindu culture, they saw that it was corrupted and it was corrupted by Muslims. “Anyone who has read Naipaul’s books will immediately recognise this matrix, which, he claims, he arrived at himself but it is already there in any Indological study long before Naipaul, nearly 200 years before he wrote his books… He writes, for instance, India was ravaged by the Muslim invaders. They ruled it severely, ravaged it for five or six centuries, and they left nothing and they brought poverty to India and so on.” Not only did he cast aspersions on the credibility of some accounts in Naipaul’s book “India: A Wounded Civilisation”, Karnad also lashed out at the Nobel laureate for his critical views on the influence of Islam on India[5]. He went on to say Naipaul had no music and therefore no conception of what the Muslims contributed to Indian history. He also commented that he was not an Indian[6]. “Naipaul is a foreigner and he is entitled to his opinion. But why give an award to a man who calls Indian Muslims ‘raiders’ and ‘marauders’? I have Muslim friends and I feel strongly about this,” he said[7]. It is not known as to why he all of sudden he could not have relished the hard and bitter facts of the Muslims marauding India starting with the invasion of Sind in 712 CE. Ironically, orthodox Muslims do not accept music as a part of Islam, as it is “anathema / haram”!

Music alone does not decide the contribution of the Muslims to India: Karnad must have known about the nuances of Indian music and also that of the Arabs, which he decided to call “Muslim”. It is not the fusion, as now the modern manipulators call the bastardization of mixing “western” and “Indian” styles of music together to create more noise to hate the original. The Muslims have done exactly the same thereby, the Indians were forced to accept such bastardized mixture of unsynchronizable notes. The Muslim Sufis actually tried to imitate Indian method of worship to convert Indians. Perhaps, any music critic could contend or settle with telling that every music form has certain individual characteristics. Therefore, if Karnad stands for the “contribution of Muslims to India”, he should spell out what type of contribution he is talking about, including the destruction of temples, breaking of idols, raping Indian women and keeping them in their harems, just to mention a few. By pointing out this, the “secularists” could very well dub it as “communal”, but truth is truth only, in spite of arguments put forward.

Karnard – not prepared to answer: Not everyone in the gathering, however, was willing to buy Karnad’s arguments. When the session was thrown open to the audience, Naipaul’s friend, writer Farrokh Dhondy, rose to ask a question. But Karnad refused to entertain any queries from him. “This is like a court where the prosecution has been presenting its case without giving any opportunity to the defence,” Dhondy remarked in anger. This is the typical present day mentality of scholars as they take shelter under such pretext to escape from facing inconvenient questions from the common people or learned people. Many times, conferences, seminars and workshops have symposiums, memorial lectures and so on, but the speakers or paper-readers never care to respond or the organizers cleverly protect them by telling “No questions”! In other words, the speakers just come to talk about what he knew or what he could speak about conveniently just to get TA and DA. He is not bothered about the quality of his speech. Many times, the audience might not be interested in listening to such forced speeches making most of them to either sleep or talk about their personal affairs.

Did Muslims not destroy temples, break idols etc in India?: Even school and college students know that what Muslims have done to India, in spite of the secularization of social processes and white-washing the atrocities committed by them and totally removing such topics in the history or Civics text books. Any Indian visits temples, mutts, ghats and other places of religion, he could easily understand who were responsible for the broken temples, damaged sculptures, ruined mantaps, smashed idols etc., with the patch-up work carried on and restored by the Archaeological department. In fact, there have been inscriptions to vouchsafe that the Muslims did so. Of course, the Muslim chronicles have recorded with pride how the Mohammedans carried out their jihad in cleaning the kufruness in India by their holy act of demolishing temples and breaking idols. Therefore, it is ironical that the learned celebrity like Karnad should have tried to negate such historical past. In any case, he cannot prevent the candidates to read such stuff, when they prepare for competitive examinations, particularly, Civil Service Examinations every year.

Lit-Fest organizers – Secularists or communalists?: Anil Dharker, director of Mumbai LitFest, said on 03-11-2912 (Saturday) he was taken aback by playwright Girish Karnad’s attack on Nobel laureate V.S. Naipaul, who was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the event[8]. “After all, we had invited him to speak about his journey in theatre, and Naipaul had nothing to do with that,” Mr. Dharker said in a statement. “Even the packed audience had come to listen to Karnad’s talk about theatre.” Dharker said he was all for free speech but free speech pre-supposed a dialogue, not diatribe. “Karnad’s two objections to Naipaul getting the Landmark Literature Live Lifetime Achievement Award are demonstrably false. Naipaul is of Indian origin, so we are not rewarding a foreigner. As for Naipaul being anti-Muslim, his wife Nadira is Muslim and her two children are being bought up as Muslim. Naipaul writes about how Muslim rulers and invaders of the past destroyed temples, monuments and so on. That’s historical facts, and who can argue against that? That does not make V.S. Naipaul anti-Muslim,” he pointed out. He also resented the implication that the organisers were somehow not secular. “I am a trustee of the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), led by Teesta Setalvad, and we have been fighting over 200 cases in court against [Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra] Modi and his government over the 2002 violence.” So by opposing Modi, one could become a secularist! In a statement, he added that, “I am all for free speech but free speech presupposes a dialogue, not a diatribe. Karnad’s two objections to Naipaul getting the award are demonstrably false,” Dharker said in a statement.

Taslima Nasreen opposing Naipaul and supporting Kanard – an opportunist act or showing that she is a Muslim: The controversial comments have sparked off a debate on web with author Taslima Nasreen tweeting in support of Karnad. Nasreen on Saturday tweeted that Naipaul was an Islamophobe. “Girish Karnad is right, Naipaul is tone deaf, wrote nothing about Indian music in his big books on India. Naipaul is a mean Islamophobe writer,” the Bangladeshi writer posted on the micro-blogging website[9]. She also called Naipaul ‘a male chauvinistic pig’ for his earlier statement claiming that he found no woman worth his literary match. Responding to a tweet she claimed, while “Girish Karnad is neither a Hindu hater nor Muslim hater, Naipaul is definitely Muslim hater.” She added that Naipaul would not have been so famous if he had written his books in one of the regional languages of India. “If Naipaul wrote his books in one of the Indian regional languages, he would have been an unknown writer even in India,” she said. She commented that, “If Naipaul wrote his books in one of the Indian regional languages, he would have been an unknown writer even in India”. Festival organiser Anil Dharker expressed dismay over the controversy saying, “We were all taken aback by Girish Karnad’s attack on VS Naipaul. After all, we had invited him to speak about his journey in theatre and Mr Naipaul had nothing to do with that!”. However, Karnard refused to apologize[10] for his outburst during the function, “I completely stand by my statement. I haven’t made any mistake, rather I came prepared for it,” Karnad said, as his remarks shocked the organisers of the Festival.

Naipaul – is a Hindu or Muslim?: Religion perhaps does not play any role in case of rich or popular people and celebrities, unless they are communal. V. S. Naipaul has married to a Muslim lady and his children are raised as Muslims only. Speaking about the incident later, Dhondy said Naipaul never made the remarks about Ayodhya Karnad had attributed to him. “In fact, his wife, Nadira, is a Muslim and so is his adopted son. By not letting me quiz him, Karnad imposed censorship, something that he himself vehemently opposes,” Dhondy said[11]. Naipaul was married to English woman Patricia Hale for 41 years, until her death from cancer in 1996. According to an authorised biography by Patrick French, the two shared a close relationship when it came to Naipaul’s work—Pat was a sort of unofficial editor for Naipaul—but the marriage was not a happy one in other respects[12]. Naipaul regularly visited prostitutes in London, and later had a long-term abusive affair with another married woman, Margaret Gooding, which his wife was aware of. Prior to Hale’s death, Naipaul proposed to Nadira Naipaul, a divorced Pakistani journalist, born Nadira Khannum Alvi[13]. They were married two months after Hale’s death, at which point Naipaul also abruptly ended his affair with Gooding. Nadira Naipaul had worked as a journalist for the Pakistani newspaper, The Nation, for ten years before meeting Naipaul. She was divorced twice before her marriage to Naipaul and has two children from a previous marriage, Maliha Naipaul and Nadir[14].

Karnad’s views appeared in Hindusthan Times[15]: His interview appeared clearly proves that he wanted to white-wash the atrocities of the Muslims committed in India. Girish Karnad spoke to HT’s Pankti Mehta on the sidelines of the Literature Live festival in Mumbai, a day after criticising VS Naipaul.

You were supposed to speak about your journey in theatre but criticised Naipaul. Isn’t that misusing the forum you were given?

What would be the point of questioning the award after the festival was over? This was a far more engaging topic. I’m sure the audience was interested. I stand by what I said. And I did speak about theatre in the second part.


The organisers gave Naipaul the award for a lifetime of work, including fiction. You critiqued only his non-fiction work about India. Even if we grant that you have a point, how can you judge his work based on just this?

Naipaul himself says that his non-fiction work, particularly about India, is his most important. You can definitely judge a writer by what he thinks is his best work. Even if it weren’t, it wouldn’t matter to me if his outrageous statements were only 10% of his work. As an awarding body, you have to take their implications into account.


Was it fair to criticise someone who wasn’t there to defend himself? You  didn’t allow (British writer who is Naipaul’s friend) Farrukh Dhondy to speak at the end.

Even if we had the time, I wouldn’t have opened it to a dialogue, because it was my talk, not anyone else’s. It would have become a tussle between Dhondy and me. Naipaul has said so many things against the Muslims – have they been there to defend themselves when he did?


Mr Dhondy says Naipaul never made many of the statements you cited. What are your sources?

I can’t vouch for each word I quoted because I wasn’t there, but this is what has been recorded in articles in newspapers and on the internet. And I only cited stray incidents, while Naipaul has over and over again said in different media that he supports the Babri Masjid demolition. He has also said, in his own writings, that Muslims have destroyed Indian culture. That’s what I have a major problem with.


How can Naipaul be anti-Muslim when he is married to a Muslim?

I don’t want to comment on his private life. I’m sure he loves his wife very much. But as I said, he has written and made public statements about how Muslims have destroyed Indian culture. That’s what I see in the open and what I spoke about.


Many Indian-origin writers live abroad, so what’s wrong if he comments about this country?

Naipaul hadn’t visited the country for the first 25 years of his life and has never lived in India. He is a foreigner. By the logic of origin, Mr Dhondy is Iranian!


V. S . Naipaul at Thinkfest in Goa[16]: Karnad was not there when Naipaul was sitting with a Muslim in Goa! Yes, a day after playwright Girish Karnad accused VS Naipaul of an anti-Muslim bias, Naipaul appeared at the Think fest in Goa alongside Arab poet Adonis. “…Adonis is a great Arab poet. Adonis is a secular poet. In India, this word has a very narrow meaning: it means belonging to one party or another. But for Adonis it is a much bigger idea; he wants to celebrate Mediterranean civilisation,” said Naipaul. After all, the celebrities compromise!

Writers, actors, literary experts want awards, rewards and titles: The simple logic is that writers, actors, literary experts want awards, rewards and titles. If one gets and the other does not get, immediately, jealousy starts working vigorously. So by doing any gimmicks on any platform, if they could prove their loyalties to any vested groups, they do it immediately eyeing for their support. After all, for nomination one has to manipulate and pull strings, as otherwise, even the genuine artist or scholar or writer would not get any honour. Ironically, in some cases one has to nominate himself as “the best” to get award! So he / she cannot feel ashamed of doing so! Some of them aping for honours till date or even after death. There have been many such celebrities dreaming for posthumous awards!

அயோத்திப் பிரச்சனையில் வரப் போகிற தீர்ப்பு இறுதியானதல்ல: உள்துறை சிதம்பரத்தின் குசும்புகளும், காங்கிரஸின் மறுமுகமும்!

சிதம்பரத்தின் பொறுப்பற்ற பேச்சு, செயல்பாடுகள்: நிதித்துறையைக் கெடுத்து, இப்பொழுது சம்பந்தமே இல்லாத உள்துறைக்கு வந்து, முஸ்லீம்கள் என்றாலே பேதியோடு அலையும் சிதம்பரம்[1], அயோத்தியா விஷயத்தில் தேவையற்ற பொறுப்பற்ற முறையில் பேசி மறைமுகமாக வன்முறையைத் தூண்ட முயற்சித்து வருவது தெரிகிறது[2]. திக் விஜய சிங் என்ற காங்கிரஸ் தரப்பு பேச்சாளர், மறுபடியும் மத கலவரங்கள் வெடிக்கும் என்று ஒப்பாரி வைத்து மிரட்டியுள்ளார்[3].

நீதிமன்றத்தின் தீர்ப்பு இந்த தேதியில் வெளியாகும் என்று ஏன் காங்கிரஸ் கலாட்டா செய்கிறது? நீதிமன்றத்தில் தினம்-தினம் பல தீர்ப்புகள் வழங்கப்படுகின்றன. இதை விட முக்கியமான பல தீர்ப்புகள் உச்சநிதி மன்றத்தில் தீர்மானமாக சொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. ஆனல், அப்பொழுதெல்லாம், இம்மாதிரியாக யாரும் விளம்பரப்படுத்தியதில்லை. மக்களை பீதிக்கு உண்டாக்கி, கலவரத்தைத் தூண்டும் அளவிற்கு எடுத்துச் சென்றதில்லை. பிறகு, ஏன் இப்பொழுதுள்ள அரசு செய்து வருகிறது? xசம்பந்தப்பட்ட்ட வாதி-பிரதிவாதிகளே அமைதியாக இருக்கும் போது, காங்கிரஸ், கருணாநிதி, சிதம்பரம் என்று சம்பந்தமே இல்லாதவர்கள் ஏன் தூபம் போட்டுக் கொண்டிருக்க வேண்டும்?

மசூதிக்காக வழக்காடும் காங்கிரஸ் வக்கீல்: காங்கிரஸ் இந்த உண்மை வெளிவந்து விடும் என்று பயப்படுகிறாதா? மசூதிக்காக வழக்காடும் பிரதிவாதி எண்.17 – ரமேஷ் சந்திர திரிபாதி என்பவர் முன்னால் காங்கிரஸ் முதல் மந்திரி ஸ்ரீபதி மிஸ்ராவின் மறுமகன்[4]. இவர்தான், உச்சநீதி மன்றத்தில், இவழ்ழகின் தீர்ப்பை ஒத்திப் போடவேண்டும் என்று வழக்குப் போட்டவர், ஆனால், நேற்றே (புதன் கிழமை) தள்ளுபடி செய்யப் பட்டது. உடனே சிதம்பரம் கூட்டம் போட்டு இப்படி பேசுகிறார். அலஹாபாத் நீதிமன்றம் ஏற்கெனெவே, இவரது மனுவை கடந்த வாரம் தள்ளுபடி செய்தது. இப்படி முஸ்லீம்களுக்காக வாதிடும் வக்கீல் நீதிமன்றத்திற்கு ஓடும் / ஓடுகின்ற வக்கீல்[5], “இப்பிரச்சினையைப் பேசித் தீர்த்துக் கொள்ளலாம்” என்றும் சொல்லியுள்ளாராம்!

திக் விஜய சிங்கின் பொறுப்பற்ற பேச்சு[6]: திக் விஜய சிங் என்ற காங்கிரஸ் தரப்பு பேச்சாளர், மறுபடியும் மத கலவரங்கள் வெடிக்கும் இதனால் நாட்டின் பொருளாதார நிலை சீரடையும் என்று ஒப்பாரி வைத்துள்ளார். நமக்கு முக்கியமானது நாட்டினுடைய பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சியே அன்றி, இத்தகைய பிரச்சினைகள் அல்ல. இதற்காக நாடி ஏற்கெனவே அதிக விலையைக் கொடுத்தாகி விட்டது (Congress on Wednesday warned against another spell of communal violence and strife undermining the country’s current economic boom. “The focus at this point should be entirely on economic growth and not on controversies like this,” said party general secretary Digvijay Singh. He said the country had already paid a heavy price as a consequence of the Ayodhya demolition).

அயோத்திப் பிரச்சனையில் வரப் போகிற தீர்ப்பு இறுதியானதல்ல[7]: இந்த சாதாரண விஷயம் எல்லோரிக்கும் தெரியும், இது சிதம்பரம் சொல்லித்தான் தெரிவதில்லை. பிறகு எதற்காக இந்த கலாட்டா?  இதில் வாதிடுபவர்கள் சட்டம் தெரிந்தவர்கள், சரித்திரம் அறிந்தவர்கள். சிதம்பரத்தைப் போல ஜிஹாதிகளுக்கு பயப்படும், பரிந்து பேசும் கோழைகள் அல்ல. முஸ்லீம் கூட்டத்தில் பங்கு கொண்டு, ஃபத்வா போடும் போது[8], “ஐயையோ, நான் அப்பொது அங்கு இல்லவே இல்லை”, என்று ஓடிப் போகும் பயந்தாகொள்ளிகள் அல்ல[9].

அதனால் பாதிக்கப்படும் எந்தத் தரப்பினரும் அப்பீல் செய்ய வாய்ப்புள்ளது: தாலியறுத்த கசாப்புக்காரன் கசாப் கூட அப்பீலுக்குத் தான் செல்கிறான். பாதிக்கப் பட்டவர் கோடிக்கணக்கான இந்தியர்கள் இருக்கிறார்கள். ஆனால், அவனுக்குதானே கோடிக்கணக்கில் செலவு செய்து வருகிறார்கள். அவனைப் போன்ற ஜிஹாதி பயங்கரவாதிகளுக்கு, காஷ்மீரத்தில்  பெண்களை வேறு கூட்டிக் கொடுக்கிறர்கள். இந்த அளவிற்கு கேவலமாக உள்ளவர்கள் தாம் “இறைவனின் மீது” என்று மனிதர்களைக் கொன்றுக் குவிக்கிறர்கள்.

எனவே தீர்ப்பை அமைதியாக எதிர்கொள்ள அனைத்துத் தரப்பினரும் முன்வர வேண்டும் என்று உள்துறை அமைச்சர் .சிதம்பரம் கூறியுள்ளார்: அயோத்தி தீர்ப்பு வெளியாகவுள்ள நிலையில் இதுகுறித்து ப.சிதம்பரம் இன்று செய்தியாளர்களிடம் பேசினார். அவர் கூறுகையில், ஒரு சட்ட நடவடிக்கையின் முடிவுதான் அலகாபாத் உயர்நீதிமன்றம் அளிக்கப் போகும் இந்தத் தீர்ப்பு. இதை அமைதியான முறையில் அனைவரும் எதிர்கொள்ள வேண்டும். இந்த தீர்ப்பில் திருப்தி இல்லாத ஒருவரோ அல்லது இரு தரப்பினருமோ சுப்ரீம் கோர்ட்டை உடனடியாக அணுகி அப்பீல் செய்ய வாய்பபுகள் உள்ளன. இந்தத் தீர்ப்பு இறுதியானதல்ல, யார் வேண்டுமானாலும் அப்பீல் செய்து நிவாரணம் தேடலாம். எனவே இதை அமைதியான முறையில் எதிர்கொள்வதை அனைத்துத் தரப்பினரும் உறுதி செய்ய வேண்டும். எந்த வகையிலும் சட்டம் ஒழுங்கு சீர்குலையாமல் பார்த்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டிய பொறுப்பு அனைவருக்கும் உண்டு. இந்தத் தீர்ப்பு ஒருவருக்கு வெற்றி என்றோ இன்னொருவருக்கு தோல்வி என்றோ பார்க்கக் கூடாது.

கோவிலுக்குத் தீர்ப்பு சாதகமாக இருந்தால்: கோவிலுக்காக தீர்ப்பு சாதகமாக இருந்தால், உடனே கோவில் கட்டுவதற்கு அனுமதி கேட்பார்கள். ஆனால், அந்த 67 ஏக்கர் நிலம் மத்திய அரசின் கையில் உள்ளது கோவிலை ஆதரிப்பவர்கள் அரசின் மீது அழுத்தத்தை ஏற்படுத்துவார்கள். ஆனால், நிச்சயமாக முஸ்லீம்கள் இதை எதிர்ப்பார்கள்[10]. மசூதிக்குத் தீர்ப்பு சாதகமாக இருந்தால்: மசூதிக்காக போராடுபர்களுக்கு சாதகமாக இருந்தால், உடனடியாக ஒரு “சரித்திர தவறு”. நடந்ததை சரி செய்யவேண்டும் என்று பாபரி கமிட்டிக்கு கொடு என்று குரல்கள் எழும்.  (In the event of the verdict favouring the masjid votaries, there would be calls to immediately correct a ‘historic wrong’ and hand over the site to the Babri committee. As the next legal step is available to the losing party, the latter is sure to approach the higher judiciary for relief).
கையகப்படுத்தியுள்ள நிலத்தை மாற்றிக் கொடுக்க தாமதம் ஏற்பட்டால்: அந்நிலையிலும் தோற்கும் குழு மேல்முறையீடு செய்யும். அந்நிலையில் நிலத்தை மாற்றுவதில் ஏற்படும் தாமதத்திற்கு சமந்தப்பட்டக் குழுக்கள் நீதிமன்ற தீர்ப்பு கொடுத்தப் பிறகுக்கூட, தாங்கள் பாதிக்கப் படுகிறோம், பலனை அனுபவிக்காமல் அரசு செய்கிறது என்பார்கள். அனைத்து மாநில அரசுகளும் மிகுந்த விழிப்புணர்வுடன் இருக்க வேண்டும்: தீர்ப்பு எதுவாக இருந்தாலும் அதை ஏற்க முன்வர வேண்டும். தீர்ப்பையொட்டி அனைத்து மாநில அரசுகளும் மிகுந்த விழிப்புணர்வுடன் இருக்குமாறு கேட்டுக் கொண்டுள்ளோம். போதிய பாதுகாப்பு நடவடிக்கைகளை மேற்கொள்ளுமாறும் அறிவுறுத்தியுள்ளோம் என்றார் ப.சிதம்பரம். தீர்ப்பை ஒத்திவைக்கக் கோரி சுப்ரீம் கோர்ட்டில் இன்று காலைதான் மனு தாக்கல் செய்யப்பட்டது. ஆனால் அதை பரிசீலித்த நீதிபதி அல்தாமஸ் கபீர் தலைமையிலான பெஞ்ச், இதை விசாரிக்க தங்களுக்கு அதிகாரம் இல்லை. மனுதாரர் வேறு கோர்ட்டை நாடுமாறு கூறி விட்டது. இதனால் அலகாபாத் உயர்நீதிமன்றம் திட்டமிட்டபடி தனது தீர்ப்பை 24ம் தேதி அறிவிக்கும் நிலை உருவாகியுள்ளது. இந்தப் பின்னணியில்தான் ப.சிதம்பரம் இன்று அவசரமாக செய்தியாளர்களைச் சந்தித்து அனைவரும் அமைதி காத்து, ஒத்துழைக்க வேண்டும் என்றார்.

மறுபடியும் கோவில்-மசூதி என்று பிரச்சினையை மாற்றியுள்ளது: காங்கிரஸ் இப்படி தொடரெந்து நீதித் துறையில் புகுந்து சட்டத்தை அசிங்கமாக்குவது நல்லதல்ல என்பதை மக்கள் பிறகுதான் உணர்வர். ஏற்கெனவே, ஒய்வு பெற்ற காங்கிரஸ் ஆதரவான நீதிபதிகளை வைத்துக் கொண்டு, தொடர்ந்து முக்கியமான பிரச்சினைகளையெல்லாம் ஏதோ கமிஷன் வைத்து[11], அறிக்கைத் தாக்கல் செய்து[12], பிரச்சினைகளைத் தீர்ப்பது போல, சட்டரீதியாக, மேன்மேலும் பிரச்சினைகளை உருவாக்கியுள்ளது. இதேபோல, இந்த ராமஜன்மபூமி-பாபரி மஸ்ஜித் வழக்கிலும் குளறுபடி செய்ய காங்கிரஸ் தீர்மானமாக உள்ளது என்பது தெரிகிறது. கோடிக்கணக்கில் ஊழலில் நாறி, பாலம், கூரைகளே தினம்-தினம் விழும் போது, ஒருவேளை, இப்படி காங்கிரஸ் செய்கிறது என்றும் ஊடகங்கள் விளக்கம் அளிக்கலம், ஆனால், முன்பு இது உள்ளூர் பிரச்சினை, வாதி-பிரதிவாதி விரச்சினை, மற்றவர்கள் தலையிடக் கூடாது என்றெல்லாம் சொன்னதை ஞாபகத்தில் வைத்துக் கொள்ளவேண்டும்.

Paul to Liberhan: How the Commission Reports work for corrupted Indian polity

Note: The coincidence has been remarkably similar and as it provoked me, I have decided to record here. I may require more proof, as time has been elapsing, memory lapsing and people forget even just-past!

26th November Mania grips Indian Politicians: One Manmohan Singh has been out of India tactfully making another Manmohan Singh to run riot in India on the eve of November 26th! As November 26 comes nearer, the secular Indian politicians want to exploit the emotional Indians to get excited and forget the real issues. Thus, they are made to forget about the rising prices of rice, vegetables, oils etc., but the rising temper. However, for some the past does not die soon. November 26th has been a Black Day in Indian history, as on that day many atrocities, murders etc., have been taken place. As this period marks auspicious for Hindus and Mohammedans, the Mohammedans had taken opportunity to attack Hindus on that day[1]. In the context of comparing political events how Commissions have been reporting, two one-man Commission Reports are coming to mind because of striking similarities. As November 26th comes nearer, obviously and consciously two politicians have been so worried – one Sonia and another Karunanidhi.

Sonia and Karunanadhi: These matured Machiavellian politicians of Secular India have been maneuvering and none can match them. On 26-11-1980 – “26th November” Subramania Pillai Executive / Verification officer of Tiruchendur Murugan temple was found murdered mysteriously. On 26-11-2009, the Islamic Jihadi terrorists bombed, attacked and killed many innocent Indians in Mumbai, of course, including the fishermen on the boat. Sonia and Karunanidhi have been so worried about the widows of the victims, as they have been haunting and daunting them every day. While the widow Sonia herself is so worried about the coincidence, the wives of Karunanidhi are so worried.


Justice C. J. R. Paul Commission Report: Paul Commission was constituted to inquire into the cold blooded murder of a Hindu Religious & Endowment Board right inside the Tiruchendur Temple in Templenadu. Paul, the retired Judge had reportedly presented his report, but not only the report disappeared, but also Paul, as his whereabouts were not known since 1970. However, in 1999, Karunanidhi indicated to newspersons[2] that “he managed to get a copy containing Jayalalitha’s demands, the same way he had obtained the C J R Paul Commission’s report on the mysterious death of Tiruchendur Murugan temple executive officer Subramania Pillai in 1982 during the M G Ramachandran regime”. Thus, it is evident that “he managed to get a copy containing Jayalalitha’s demands, the same way he had obtained the C J R Paul Commission’s report”. Thus, for the people in power getting copy of Commission Reports is not at all a big thing. Here, the question is how it disappeared!


Justice Manmohan Singh Liberhan Report: The Justice Manmohan Singh Liberhan Commission of Inquiry was appointed on December 16, 1992, 10 days after the demolition of the Babri Masjid[3]. He was, then a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was assigned the task of probing the sequence of events that led to the occurrences at the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid complex on December 6, 1992, resulting in the destruction of the structure. In a notification issued, the then Union Home Secretary, Madhav Godbole had said that the Commission would submit its report to the Central government “as soon as possible but not later than three months”.


17 years investigation -48 extensions-16½ hours presentation- 900 page Report: But with 48 extensions, the Liberhan panel became the longest Commission of Inquiry in the history of Independent India. The last extension was in March this year for three months. It took the Commission 16-and-a-half years to submit its 900-plus-page report. By June 30, 2009, when the report was submitted to Prime Minsiter Manmohan Singh, the Union Government had spent over Rs eight crore on the commission, making it the most costliest ever. Most of the expenses was spent on salary and perks of the supporting staff.  As part of its brief, the Liberhan Commission had been asked to look into the role played by the then chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Kalyan Singh and his ministerial colleagues, officials of the UP Government, central leaders and by individuals, agencies concerned and organisations in bringing down the structure. The commission held 399 sittings and in the course of its investigation, examined powerful people like former prime minister P V Narasimha Rao, BJP leaders L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Kalyan Singh, VHP leader Ashok Singhal, the Congress’s Arjun Singh, and former UP chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.


Karunanidhi’s official involvements in murders and assassination, acquitted later[4]: People generally forget the recent past. In how many murders and assassination, Karunanidhi was officially involved? In fact, people, particularly, the non-Tanilnadu citizens know very well that he was one of the accused in the Indira Gandhi attempted murder along with 6 others in 1969. Indira Gandhi gave relief to him by withdrawing the case. He has been also under the suspicion of assassination Rajiv Gandhi, as he was / is having links with LTTE. Even when Priyanka met Nalini one of the offenders and undergoing punishment in Vellore jail, she was asking as to any political parties were involved in the assassination plot of his father?  He was also involved in the cold-blooded murder of the Tiruchendur temple priest and people might have forgotten the Justice Paul Commission Report. The report itself was made disappeared ad the Judge made kept quite.


Karunanidhi and Commissions: Karunanidhi has always been a man of two faces, many tongues. He keeps harping publicly that he is willing to face any inquiry against him. But when an inquiry commission is instituted, he always runs away from it. He tried to run away from the Justice Sarkaria Commission constituted to inquire into corruption charges against him. Another example is the case where the Justice Paul Commission Report was stolen. A case was registered and in this connection in the Madras High Court his attitude of non-cooperation was heard by Justice Singaravelu. Karunanidhi, the fourth accused in the case, refused to cooperate. In fact, the learned Judge[5] observed that “Even if the 4th accused is brought to Court through some coercive steps, it would be futile and the proposed remedy would only aggravate the malady…‘ Karunanidhi  had obtained the C J R Paul Commission’s report on the mysterious death of Tiruchendur Murugan temple executive officer Subramania Pillai in 1982 during the M G Ramachandran regime[6]. Ironically, the verification Officer of Hindu Religious & Endowment was murdered[7] on 26-11-1980, “26th November”!


Sonia daunted and haunted by widows: After the Sikh widows meeting, Sonia,  the widow was totally upset by another group of widows meeting her. There were moments in the meeting, according to sources, when the women talked about the similar situation inflicted on them by fate. “I also went through a similar situation,” Sonia reportedly told Kavita, recalling the time after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination[8]. However, the fact being that none of the widows are happy with Sonia. Not only the Sikh widows[9], now the Sri Lankan Tamil widows have also been in the same feeling, as if they were betrayed.


‘Don’t challenge my character…get lost’: Upset over the “leakage” of his report on Babri Masjid demolition, Justice (retd) Manmohan Singh Liberhan on Monday said he was not a “characterless” person who will hand it over to the media. “I will not speak on the report. If the report is with the media, then go and find out from where the media got it and who provided the report,” a visibly angry Liberhan told reporters at his residence in Sector 9 in Chandigarh. When it was pointed out that the opposition had been alleging that the report was “selectively leaked” and asked whether it was leaked from “his side”, Liberhan said, “let the opposition say anything, but what do you mean by this? “Don’t challenge my character…get lost,” a perturbed Liberhan, who lost his cool, said. “I am not a person who is accessible to you (media)…I don’t want to talk about it,” he said. “I am not that characterless a person that I will hand over the report to the media before being placed in Parliament,” Liberhan said.

The outburst of Manmohan Singh and Karunanidhi: The flare-up of Manmohan singh is something inexplicable and unwarranted, as it is open secret what these “One Man Commission” would deliver! Here, also the reaction has been remarkably striking! Karunanidhgi retorted to the media persons, when he was questioned about his son – Azhagiri’s involvement in a murder case. Immediately, he flared up and started accusing in a derogatory way, “…You are the murderer…..I  tell you are the murderer……..”. “I am not that characterless a person that I will hand over the report to the media before being placed in Parliament,” Liberhan said. Yes, had he been so conscious about the justice, he would not have taken 17 years with all government perks and all enjoying life and finally present the “Prepared Report” to Congress at a particular time. And Karunanidhi obtained the C. J. R. Paul Report and reportedly destroyed as none knew where it had gone!

Justice delayed is Justice denied: Perhaps, even a student knows what it is. Then with all character conscious retired Judge should not have delayed his report. In fact, he could have resigned and gone sensing the political interference and his self-exploitation of becoming “Yes Master”. But he has not done. Nowadays, everybody knows the practical nuances of 900 pages report. How it is typed, corrected, retyped, corrected, and finally, correct or accepted copy is taken out, out of the printer! So can we say that the report has been so fool-proof that it could not have been accessed by anybody, even the “accepted copy” or “final draft” was being read by him up to his satisfaction! Then, he must have typed himself in his own computer, taken rough drafts, made corrections and then the final report. He must have destroyed all the early copies. Has he done that exactly, so that he can assert that the report was not leaked out!.

·         Therefore, instead of presenting the facts to the people without any controversy, why the learned Judges, and others indulge in such emotional outbursts?

·         Having delayed, he could have suggested releasing it after 26th November, instead of before 26th!

·         Can Indians find any difference between the visibly cognizable sycophants like Navin Chawla and himself?

·         The general public may doubt their credentials, as the happenings go in different way!
