Bangalore blast: Families of suspects cry foul
    TNN | Apr 27, 2013, 01.07 AM IST
    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bangalore/Bangalore-blast-Families-of-suspects-cry-foul/articleshow/19747453.cms

BANGALORE: Family members of the three suspects arrested by Bangalore police in connection with the April 17 blast on Temple Street, Malleswaram, on Friday said their men were innocent.

Syed Mohammed Buhari alias ‘Kitchan’ Buhari, K Peer Moideen and Basheer Ahmed were arrested on April 22 and April 23. “We, family members of the accused, demand a thorough investigation in the case. Police are framing the three accused,” read a statement given by the family members.

According to Daulath, her son Buhari was the co-ordinator of a charitable trust for minorities, organizing social activities for minorities in backward areas. For six months, Buhari, along with his team of lawyers, was helping Coimbatore bomb blast accused to fight their cases before the Supreme Court.

Buhari had gone to Delhi to meet Supreme Court lawyers for the bail matter of one Sheikh Sintha Madhar. He left Coimbatore on April 12 and reached Delhi on April 14. The case was posted for April 15, but as the judge was on leave, it was adjourned to April 16. Buhari and his friend Mohammed Ali Khan left Delhi on April 16 after the case and reached Chennai around 8.30pm on April 17 by Duronto Express, his mother said. Police had questioned him on April 18 on the Malleswaram blast case. They questioned him about the whereabouts of one Police Bakruddin.

According to Buhari’s wife Banu, her husband denied having any knowledge of the man and pleaded innocence. On April 22, around 5am, her husband was arrested by the special team, along with Sulaiman and Shalihin from the Melapalayam bus stand.

Rassool Moideen, brother-in-law of Peer Moideen said he had requested Peer and Basheer, the two suspects in police custody, to come to Chennai to make purchases for the marriage of his daughter. Basheer left Tirunelveli on April 18 and reached Chennai on April 19. Peer left Bangalore on April 18 and reached Bangalore the next day.

“We had finished shopping in Pothys shop in T Nagar, Chennai, on April 20. When we were coming out, around 10 policemen detained four of us (Peer Moideen, Basheer, Saleem and Rasool) and took us to the police commissioner’s office. Saleem and I were freed three days later,” Rasool said.

“Therefore it is clear that Peer and Basheer were in illegal custody from April 20 to April 22, since Bangalore claims that they were arrested on April 22 at 10.30pm,” the statement read.

Sayed Ali Fatima, wife of Peer Moideen, said he was a tea powder seller and had no links with the terrorists. He used to visit their family of three every two months. Shamshunisa, wife of Basheer, said he had never been to a police station or Bangalore in his life.

    Evidence suggests it

The whereabouts of these men during the blast do not prove anything. Apart from that, we went by the book. The evidence suggested their involvement in the blast case. We requested the court for their police custody and were granted. We are not labelling these men as anything but we questioning them as we believe they have information regarding the blast.

The police are yet to get any definitive clues to Wednesday’s blast in Malleswaram in the city that injured 16 people. Karnataka Director-General and Inspector-General of Police Lal Rokhuma Pachau announced a Rs. 5 lakh reward to anyone who provides credible information about the blast.

Mr. Pachau told reporters that investigations were on and special teams under Joint Commissioner Pronab Mohanty were working on the case.

The city police are being assisted by Central Forensic Science Laboratory officials, bomb disposal squads and teams from the National Investigating Agency and the National Security Guard.

Preliminary investigation revealed that ammonium nitrate and a timer were used to trigger the blast.

      Vehicle owner

Bangalore City Police Commissioner Raghavendra H. Auradkar said the motorcycle in which the improvised explosive device (IED) was placed was traced to a man in Chennai who is being questioned.

Mr. Auradkar said the police were scouring the debris for clues. Though crucial evidence may have been washed away while dousing the fire, some have been salvaged.

CCTV footage from buildings around the blast site does not seem to have yielded anything substantial. The CCTV installed in the house opposite focussed only on the house and the staircase while that from the Bharatiya Janata Party office covered its own building.

The CCTV at a temple nearby was pointed in a different direction. All other CCTVs in the vicinity are being examined and the police are also checking cellphone call records.

The police have spoken to eyewitnesses and will question terror suspects already lodged in jail if they see fit. Mr. Auradkar told reporters it was premature to point any fingers at any organisation at this stage.

Security has been strengthened at the Raj Bhavan, the High Court, the Vidhana Soudha, Chinnaswamy Stadium, bus terminals, the international airport, railway stations, metro stations, tech parks, Union government offices, malls, shopping complexes, markets, religious places and offices of political parties.

On whether the city police had any prior information about the blast, Mr. Auradkar said they did not, adding that they had received a general advisory to step up security in the wake of IPL cricket matches and the Assembly elections.

      Shettar visit

On Thursday, Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and State BJP president Pralhad Joshi visited the site and the injured in hospital. Mr. Shettar told reporters that the blast, though serious, should not be politicised.

Bangalore blast: It is a complete wash out

    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Bangalore-blast-It-is-a-complete-wash-out/articleshow/19744669.cms

BANGALORE: It is usual to blame each other, local police picking up holes in lack of intelligence in-puts on bomb explosion. But this time, the investigators have found a new adversary in Fire and Emergency Services.

“It is a complete wash out and we have picked up toothpaste, nuts and bolts and other small items that may not help up with complete evidence on the Malleshwaram blast of April 17 in front of the state BJP office,” said a forensic expert who camped for three days at the blast spot.

The residue of blast were taken away by three agencies, Forensic Science laboratory experts in the city, Central Forensic Science Laboratory experts from Hyderabad and the national Investigating Agency bomb disposal squad, said an officer. But as the matter remains, the investigators might find it difficult to pinpoint the exact device that was used in the blast.

“We are sure it was ammonium nitrate that was the blast material. How it was triggered, whether using a remote control or through timer is difficult to conclude. This is main task for us and ahead of us for the investigators who will be filing the chargesheet. This time around it is difficult that we cannot help the investigators for sure about the blast material. That will become a difficult task for the investigators to convince the law about the way the entire blast took place,” said an expert.

For three days all three agencies tried to pick up remnants, but it took them to dead-end. “Being in blast probe is difficult as there remained no clinching evidence on the blast material. The fire and emergency services poured water on our hopes,” said another expert.

However, a senior fire and emergency services officer told TOI that it was their prime duty to bring down the inferno that was going to bigger danger to the entire populated area. “We have done our work. Nobody should blame us for that,” he said.

The Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday rushed a team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) sleuths to probe the Bangalore blast that took place, even as the Centre alerted all State governments to step up vigil, particularly around sensitive locations.

“A team of the NIA and a bomb disposal squad of the National Security Guard have reached Bangalore. We are in constant touch with the Karnataka government and ready to offer any help, which is required,” Minister of State for Home R.P.N. Singh told journalists here.

Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who was in Kolkata to take part in the Eastern Zonal Council meeting, said the NIA would investigate the case. He was in touch with the State government and the police, he told journalists.

Meanwhile, the MHA issued an advisory to all States asking them to beef up security and enhance deployment of police personnel, particularly in and around sensitive and crowded locations like places of worship, markets and malls.

Sources in the MHA said Indian Mujahideen, which is allegedly responsible for recent blasts in Hyderabad and Pune, could be behind the Bangalore blast.

“Though it is too early to name any organisation, the evidence gathered so far by probe agencies indicates that it could be the handiwork of the Indian Mujahideen. The use of improvised explosive device and ammonium nitrate is what the banned outfit had used in the past as well,” the sources said.

Bangalore blast victims to take CET exam from hospital beds

BANGALORE: Like any other CET aspirant, RakshitaSujai and Leeza NS are busy preparing for the examination that begins on May 1. But here is the difference. While the rest will write the test at examination centres across Karnataka, these two will do so from their hospital bed.

The two victims of the April 17 Malleswaram bomb blast, after getting permission from the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), will write CET from MS Ramaiah Memorial Hospital in Malleswaram. Both of them were admitted to the hospital after sustaining injuries in the blast and are still recovering. They are bedridden.

A team lead by SP Kulkarni, administrative officer, KEA, visited the hospital on Friday to ensure that all arrangements are in place. The duo will write the test in a separate room, adhering to certain norms laid down by KEA.

“Both are in the hospital and cannot move. We have decided to allow them to write the test on humanitarian grounds. They will be made to sit in a separate ward and an invigilator will be present. A special squad will also be sent there. All formalities that are done at a regular test centre will be adopted here as well,” said a KEA official.

The arrangements were made after parents of the girls along with the hospital management approached KEA.

Females in India are role models, talented, capable but we focus only on distorted, negative sides. Shabiriji whom Shree Ramji Respected, Sitaji, Krishna bhakt Rani Meerabai, Shiva Bhakt Akka Mahadevi, Andal,a female saint ,Sonali Mukherjee, acid attack victim won 25lakhs on KBC by her hard work, Shirin Juruwalay attacked by acid by her husband who ran away founded Palash Foundation for people who are disfigured, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw introduced biotechnology through her Biocon company, Lijjad Papad run by female of India, Khabar Lahriya a rural newspaper run by female many were born in Harijan family, Kalpana Saroj born in Harijan family transformed a debt company Kamani Tubes into millions,
Under Rani Naiki Devi [of Gujarat region] Leadership in 12AD defeated Arab invaders,
Under Abbaka Rani of Ullal leadership in 16th Century for 40 years she stopped Portuguese,

When man is educated we educate that man but when we educate female we educate entire family. Without females no future. Where women are not respected prayer, yagna won’t give solution. We follow above ancient Indian saying in words for sweet talk not practice. Remove distorted facts like Present dowry system is European based yes Bombay was given as dowry check these facts. In Hindu it was called streedhan which was property of daughter cannot be used by groom & his family & it was generally used in emergency like when she was widow. Purdah system, Early Marriage came when Arab invaders captured our females converted them, enslaved them thus wanting more boys to fight. Hindu caste system was not birth based but ability based [Knowledge, Power, Land, and Wealth not in one hand] & no untouchability. But it’s the fault of Hindu society who have distorted mindset in the above issue .Spread the message right now but before that crosscheck it & understand it & start this change right now in your family, friends.Respect good views, thoughts, works everytime.Leaders create Leaders not followers & does not do appeasement but shows mirror

Relatives approach court, manage to get permission to meet the arrested.

Family members of suspects arrested in connection with the Malleswaram bomb blast case have charged the Bangalore police with foisting false cases against their relatives.

After police refused to allow them to meet the suspects, their family members approached the court of the judicial magistrate and managed to get permission.

Addressing the media, a group of women, including mothers, wives, children and other family members of the three arrested suspects and the two who were released from the custody, said that the three men were innocent and demanded a thorough investigation into the case.

Relatives of Peer Mohideen and Basheer said the two suspects were family men and not involved in terror-related activities. Basheer lived in Tirunelveli with his wife and four children aged eight, six, five and 10 months.

Mohideen and Peer were arrested when they were having tea at a stall in Chennai.

Mohideen had been to Chennai to attend a marriage and had called Basheer to pick him at Chennai. Basheer left Tirunelveli for Chennai on April 18, same day that Mohideen left Bangalore to reach Chennai the next day.

IN Chennai, Mohideen and Basheer met their brother-in-law Rasool and another relative Saleem. As they were leaving a tea stall, a team of around 10 policemen in plain cloths picked them up. Rasool and Saleem were released on April 23 at around 1am. The police announced the arrest of Mohideen and Basheer three days after they were picked.

As for Kichan Buhari, a caterer, who also runs an NGO for minorities in Coimbatore and who was also acquitted in Coimbatore blast case, his family claimed that Buhari was in Delhi on April 16, to attend a hearing of a court involving his friend. He left Delhi on April 16 night and was picked up when he reached Chennai, along with his friends Sulaiman and Saleh, as they waited for a bus to Madurai.

Relatives of Saddam Hussain, a used motorcycle dealer, said he was in Salem jail in connection with an assault case, but the Bangalore police took his custody claiming that the motorcycle used in the Malleswaram belonged to him.

Joint commissioner (crime-east) S Murugan refused to comment on the allegations made by the suspects’ families and claimed that the police investigation was on the right track.

Freed blast suspect loses way in Bangalore

Three days after he was taken into custody in the Malleswaram blast case, 28-year-old Aliyappa was released on Friday.

Mr. Aliyappa is among nine suspects picked up jointly by the Tamil Nadu and Bangalore city police since the blast on April 17.

A visibly bruised and battered Mr. Aliyappa on Friday lost his way in the city after his release from Madiwala interrogation cell. Having come to make a living here, Mr. Aliyappa, a native of Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, neither knows Kannada nor the city.

He was a room-mate of arrested suspect Peer Mohiudeen with whom he was selling biscuits and tea powder at Venkateshpura, near Tannery Road, for about six months.

On Friday, he managed to reach Shivajinagar with great difficulty. Coincidentally, in nearby Queen’s Road, the Association of People for Civil Rights (APCR) had organised a press meet in which Mr. Aliyappa’s family was present. Despite giving Mr. Aliyappa directions he was unable to reach the venue on time. Some activists asked him to come to a particular bus-stop at Shivajinagar terminus, and thus tracked him. Mr. Aliyappa, who arrived at the press meet after it was over, told reporters that the police questioned him intensively for three days.

“I did not know any of the answers to their questions and they let me go. They asked me to sign on a blank paper and ordered me not to discuss my detention with anyone,” he told The Hindu.

The APCR is planning to approach the State human rights commission and the courts regarding the detentions.

Mr. Aliyappa was detained for three days by the police without informing his family, Irshad Ahmed Desai of APCR said, adding that this amounted to kidnapping.

Mr. Aliyappa had become incommunicado with his family members after he was picked up by the police at 2.30 a.m. on April 22.

His concerned family approached a local advocate Abdul Kalam Bagadur Sha, who sent a telegram to the city Police Commissioner on April 25 after which he was released the next day.

While five of the nine picked up have been released, the others in police custody are Peer Mohideen, Basheer, Kichan Buhari and Saddam Hussein.

The family members of the Malleswaram bomb blast terror suspects, who arrived in Bangalore Thursday, managed to get permission to meet their arrested relatives from a city court after the police had turned down their request.

S.I. Abdul Kalam Bagadur Sha, their advocate, told The Hindu the court has permitted them to meet the suspects once in two days.

After Police Commissioner Raghavendra H. Auradkar refused to see them, the families — comprising mothers, wives, children and others of the three terror suspects — addressed the media and moved the first additional chief metropolitan magistrate’s court.

Speaking to reporters, the members demanded a thorough investigation into the blasts and the release of suspects if they are found innocent.

    Sole breadwinners

Among the accused, Peer Mohideen and Basheer, who were picked up from Tamil Nadu, are the sole breadwinners. Rasool Mohideen, the brother-in-law of Peer Mohideen, a tea leaf vendor in Venkateshpura in Bangalore, who was detained and later released in Chennai, said Peer has a wife and three children aged 11, 10 and 8, while Basheer, a resident of Tirunelveli, has a wife and four children aged 8, 6, 5 and 10 months.

Basheer’s wife, Shamsunnisa, said her husband had no criminal background and he had never visited Bangalore.

Peer Mohideen had left for Chennai to attend Rasool’s daughter’s wedding. He had called Basheer to come and pick him up at Chennai. While Basheer left from Tirunelveli to Chennai on April 18, Peer left Bangalore the same day and reached Chennai the next day. Peer met Basheer and Rasool in Chennai on April 19 and they went to Mohammed Saleem, a relative, who works as an AC technician at Pothys Market in T. Nagar.

    Picked up

The four, after having tea at a roadside stall, were about to leave for shopping when they were picked up by a team of 10 policemen in mufti. While Rasool and Mohammed were released on April 23 at 1 a.m., the police said Peer and Basheer were arrested after three days of detention.

Meanwhile, Daulat, the mother of the arrested suspect, Kichan Buhari, a caterer, who was running an NGO after his acquittal in the Coimbatore blast case, said her son had been away in Delhi to meet an advocate to discuss a bail plea for someone else. He had left Coimbatore on April 12, reaching Delhi on April 14 and stayed there for two days to attend the bail hearing in the Supreme Court. Buhari, along with his friend Mohammed Ali Khan, left Delhi on April 16 and reached Chennai on April 17 at 8.30 p.m. by Duranto Express, Ms. Daulat said.

After staying in Chennai for two days, he left for Coimbatore on April 19. The next day he met the lawyer of Saddam Hussain, a second-hand bike dealer who was in Salem jail in connection with an assault case. Saddam Hussain is the fourth person in Bangalore police’s custody in connection with the Malleswaram blast. He is accused of being the agent who sold the motorcycle to which the bomb was strapped.

Buhari was arrested on April 22 when he was waiting at the Madepalyam bus-stand along with his two friends Sulaiman and Saleh, who were released the next day.

Joint Commissioner of Police S. Murugan refused to comment on the families’ claims. He said investigations are on the right track, but was mum on the detentions.

Minister, police at odds over number of blast arrests

Ashok says four but city police maintain three have been held

Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok, who also holds the Home portfolio, on Wednesday, said that four persons had been picked up by the police for investigations related to the bomb blast near the Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters in Bangalore.

Participating in a meet-the-press programme jointly organised by the Press Club of Bangalore and Bangalore Reporters’ Guild here, he said the arrested were Kichan Buhari, Basheer (alias Sunnati Basheer), Peer Mohideen and Mohideen — all from Tamil Nadu and who had links with the banned terror group Al Umma.

The police were on the lookout for another suspect Anwar Basha, also an accused in Coimbatore blast case [targeting Advani] who is said to be residing in Bangalore for the last one year.

    ‘Kingpin at large’

Mr. Ashok who stuck to his earlier stand that the blast was targeted at the BJP, declined to comment on whether the ongoing investigations had confirmed such a suspicion. “Investigations are still on by the police of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu besides the National Investigative Agency. Only at the end of it will police be able to say who are the conspirators are, the country of their origin and their targets.” He also pointed out that the kingpin of the blast was yet to be nabbed.

When asked how the BJP leaders including himself could suspect that their party was the target even before the conclusion of the investigations, he shot back: “If a bomb is planted in your house, will you not say that you were the target. In a similar way the BJP leaders have made the above remarks,” he said.

    Numbers don’t match

The Home Minister’s claims were curiously at odds with what the police had to say. The city police insisted only three men have been arrested so far in connection with the April 17 Malleswaram blast and that the investigations are on to ascertain their links with any extremist group.

“We will not comment on the course of investigations,” said a senior police official heading the probe.

When asked about the existence of a fourth suspect person as mentioned by Mr. Ashok, the official said the police is not aware of such a person. As for the suspect Anwar Basha, the official said the person mentioned by Mr. Ashok is “definitely not on the list” of suspects.

Police Commissioner Raghavendra H. Auradkar, earlier in the day, had also confirmed to reporters about three arrests so far. “The role of other people in the blast is being probed and the suspects are being questioned on their motive and modus operandi.”

    Circumstantial evidence

The men were picked up on circumstantial evidence and police are analysing the videos to ascertain whether they suspects were present at the site before or during the blast.

“We are waiting for the Forensics Science Lab report to ascertain the nature of explosives used in the blast,” Mr. Auradkar said and added that an identification parade of the arrested will be held.

    Speculations rubbished

Meanwhile, Joint Commissioner of Police Pronab Mohanty said that the city police are not questioning the jailed People’s Democratic Party leader Abdul Naser Maudany. Mr. Maudany’s advocate Usman rubbished speculations about his client’s supposed role in the Malleswaram blast.

Bangalore blast: Sleuths unable to identify device that triggered explosion
    TNN | Apr 27, 2013, 01.10 AM IST
    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Bangalore-blast-Sleuths-unable-to-identify-device-that-triggered-explosion/articleshow/19747480.cms

BANGALORE: Ten days after a bomb blast rocked Malleswaram, investigators are still struggling to identify the exact nature of the device used to trigger the explosion.

“We are sure the explosive used was ammonium nitrate. How the blast was set off, by a remote control or a timer, is difficult to conclude. That is the main task ahead of us. It will be difficult for investigators to convince the judiciary how the blast occurred,” said a forensic expert.

According to investigators, the evidence at the blast site was washed away in the deluge of water released by officials of the fire and emergency services while they were trying to douse the fire. “It was a complete wash-out. The things we picked up, like toothpaste, nuts and bolts and other small items, may not help us piece together all evidence and get a complete picture of the blast,” the forensic expert, who camped at the site for three days, said.

The blast debris was collected by Forensic Science Laboratory, Bangalore, Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Hyderabad and the bomb disposal squad of National Investigation Agency, said an officer. But as the matter remains, the investigators might find it difficult to pinpoint the exact device that was used in the blast.

“We haven’t got any clinching evidence regarding the blast device. The fire and emergency services poured water on our hopes,” said another forensic expert.

Meanwhile, a senior official of the fire and emergency services told TOI that it was their prime duty to put out the fire that posed a danger in the densely populated area. “We only did our job. Nobody should blame us for that,” he said.
