During a speech at Bantwal on Wednesday, Rai said his opponent was RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat and not the candidate Rajesh Naik. He is just a pawn in the scheme of things. The real opponent is Bhat,” he said. He said these polls will be an opportunity to give a fitting reply to the persons who have hatched conspiracies and torn the social fabric in this district and urged people to support Congress in this fight. He also took a dig at the parivar supremo in Bantwal taluk saying that the BJP factory churns out lies and false accusations, but it will not work this time. Security UP: Security has been stepped up in twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi on Wednesday following a blast near BJP office in Bangalore. Ujjain: A local court here on Tuesday issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh and Ujjain’s Congress MP Prem Chand Guddu after they failed to appear before it in connection with a case against them and others for allegedly thrashing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) workers.

BJYM workers were chased and beaten up allegedly by Congressmen, including Singh and Guddu, on July 17, 2011 when they tried to show them black flags protesting against a remark by the Congress General Secretary.

Following this, a case was registered against Congress leaders Jai Singh, Anant Narayan Meena, Mukesh Bhati and Amar Lal.

Later, an application was moved in the local court with a plea to make Singh, Guddu, Hemant Chouhan and Dilip Choudhary accused in the case, after which the court had admitted the plea and issued summons to them.

Except Digvijay Singh and Guddu, others were granted bail by the court when they appeared in the case.

However, Digvijay Singh and Guddu did not appear in the court today and moved a plea seeking exemption from personal appearance in the case. But the Tenth Additional Sessions Judge Dipesh Tiwari rejected their plea and issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against them.

The court has fixed April 30 as the next date of hearing in the case

Cong suspects RSS hand, BJP claims its leaders were target
    Bangalore, April 17, 2013, DHNS:
    http://www.deccanherald.com/content/326750/cong-suspects-rss-hand-bjp.html

The bomb blast near the State BJP office in Malleshwaram on Wednesday might have sent shivers down the spine of Bangaloreans. But, political parties are trying to make an issue of it ahead of the May 5 Assembly polls.

Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah blamed the BJP and the Sangh Parivar saying that they end up committing such acts for political gains. Another Congress leader, H Vishwanath, MP from Mysore, alleged that RSS is a suspect in the incident. “RSS has a history of indulging in acts of terrorism. They have done it in Malegaon. The Central investigation agencies should crack the case and expose those behind the blasts before the elections are over,” he stated.

BJP legislator G Madhusudan, who is also from Mysore, hit back at the Congress leaders, saying that their statements were politically motivated.

“The Congress leaders have proved beyond doubt that they can stoop to any level for political gains. Can we question whether the Congress leaders killed former prime ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi only to win elections?” he asked.

Soon after the explosion near the BJP office, Home Minister R Ashoka stated that it was a clear terrorist act and, claimed that senior BJP leaders and workers were the target.

The BJP, in an official release, said that the blast had occurred at a time when senior leaders, including the Chief Minister and State party president, are normally present in the office.

So, it is clear that the target of the terror act was the BJP. “Intention of the act is to disturb the electoral process and intimidate people. Any efforts to terrorise BJP leaders and workers will not be successful. The party will not get cowed down by such acts,” the BJP stated.

JD(S) state president H D Kumaraswamy said the timing of the blast gives room for doubts.

“We must find out whether the blast was intentional. It should be found out whether anybody is trying to create sympathy wave for themselves ahead of the elections,” he said.

The CPM, while condemning the blast, said that the timing of the explosion leads to many suspicion as it has happened ahead of the polls.

The intentions behind the blast could be to gain public sympathy and influence the elections. A thorough probe will bring out the truth, the party added.

Warrant for Maulana Syed Ahmed Bukhari, cops ordered to execute itUtkarsh Anand : New Delhi, Wed Jul 04 2012, 09:04 hrs
    http://www.indianexpress.com/news/warrant-for-maulana-syed-ahmed-bukhari-cops-ordered-to-execute-it/970017/0

A Delhi court has issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Maulana Syed Ahmed Bukhari, in connection with a criminal case and directed police to arrest and produce him in court.
Slamming the Delhi Police for failing to execute an earlier warrant against him, Metropolitan Magistrate Rajinder Singh issued a fresh NBW against Bukhari. Despite a warrant, the Shahi Imam remained absent and brought court proceedings in the matter to a halt, he said.

Issuing the warrant, the Magistrate referred to an earlier court order that reproached the Police department, including the Commissioner of Police, for not having the “courage” to execute the warrant against Bukhari in the criminal case lodged against him and two others in 2001.

The Magistrate observed that legal provisions entailed initiating the proceedings of declaring Bukhari a proclaimed offender, but doing so would “undermine the authority of law.”

“In my considered opinion, declaring accused Ahmed Bukhari a proclaimed offender would be a mockery of law and it would provide an easy escape route to the accused. It is surprising and shocking as well to see the police force not able to execute the NBW issued against Bukhari. Such inaction by police cannot be tolerated,” he said in his order last week. A copy of the order was made available only now.

The court has ordered the station house officer of Lodhi Colony to “personally” execute the warrant by July 17 and show up in court on the next date with a report. The report has to be forwarded by the DCP concerned.

The FIR, lodged with Lodhi Colony police station, had accused Bukhari along with two others — Habib-ur-Rehman and Nafisa — of rioting, obstructing and assaulting public servants from discharging their duties.

The alleged incident took place on September 3, 2001, when police and civic agencies officials were reportedly trying to remove encroachment from near CGO Complex in Lodhi Colony. But a mob, led by Bukhari, reportedly assaulted them.

Habib-ur-Rehman and Nafisa were arrested, but the cleric was not picked up on the ground that there would be a law and order problem. Later, the chargesheet was filed and he was named as accused, but was not arrested.

In January 2004, the court had ordered re-investigation of the case, noting that proper inquiry was not carried out and Bukhari was also not arrested. Later, police said he could not be arrested because this could lead to “communal riots”.

In May 2006, an NBW was issued through the DCP (South). The officer failed to execute it and police kept on seeking time. They also claimed that Bukhari was untraceable.

In July 2010, the court criticised police for their failure to execute the warrant and asked the Commissioner of Police to execute the warrant in order to uphold the “rule of law”. However, a few days later, the court was informed that even the Commissioner had failed to execute the warrant.

“I can say from the record that in Delhi, police officers up to the rank of Commissioner of Police have no courage to execute the warrant against Bukhari. Name of the accused along with his residential address is known to the police, but the officers have failed to arrest the accused since 2001. Nine years have passed and because of the non-execution of NBWs, proceedings cannot be conducted further,” the court said on December 14 last year.

It asked the Commissioner of Police to be in court and inform if Bukhari was “above the law”.

However, in May 2011, the prosecutor moved an application, seeking its approval to withdraw the case in “public interest”. The prosecutor said the application was moved following a recommendation from Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor and Deputy Secretary (Home).

Before the court could take a call on this application, a protest petition was moved. It contended that the plea has no merit. This application will come up for hearing on July 17.

    Syed Abdullah Bukhari (8 July 1973 – 14 October 2000)

The twelfth Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Maulana Syed Abdullah Bukhari (87), passed away today at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences after a short bout of illness.

Bukhari, who breathed his last around 9.15 am, had been under treatment at AIIMS for the last few weeks. Prior to that, he was admitted at Sanjeevan Hospital.

The city’s Muslim dominated areas and markets in and around Jama Masjid, including the usually bustling Meena Bazar, wore a deserted look to mourn the death. Shops in the Walled City remained closed for the day as a mark of respect. Many other markets like Chawri Bazar, Lal Kuan, Daryaganj, Matia Mahal, Urdu Bazar, Turuk Market and Kabadi Bazar remained closed as well.

Delhi Muslims expressed grief over the demise of the former Imam. Irshad Ahmad, a shopkeeper at Meena Bazar, who was present at the funeral said, “All through my childhood, I offered namaaz behind him. Now he is no more. Our rehbar (caretaker) has gone.”

Syed Abdullah Bukhari was appointed the Vice Shahi Imam in 1946. He became the Shahi Imam on July 8, 1973. He shot into the limelight during the Emergency, when he stood up against the then government. “He was the one who looked Indira Gandhi in the eye,” mourner Qazi Ayub Hassan Choudhary said.

CM Sheila Dikshit, Haroon Yusuf, MLA Ballimaran, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union Health Minister, were among the first visitors at the Jama Masjid. “He worked towards the betterment of all communities,” Dikshit said.

Bukhari is survived by four sons and two daughters.

The Rediff Interview/Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari
    http://www.rediff.com/news/2000/nov/29inter.htm

Within days of taking over as the Shahi Imam of the Jama Masjid, India’s biggest mosque, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, has created a political storm. The cleric has hit the headlines with controversial statements on the brokering of peace in Jammu & Kashmir and forming a new political party, exclusively for Muslims.

His father, Syed Abdullah Bukhari, the last head cleric, handed over charge to him at a tearful ceremony. Though assigned the job of conducting daily prayers, the Shahi Imam has often made political statements at his prayer meetings. Syed Ahmed Bukhari answers this and many other thorny questions with a straight face in an exclusive interview with Roving Editor Ramesh Menon.

To begin with, how does it feel to be the Shahi Imam of the Jama Masjid?

I feel very responsible. Now, I want to work for humanity. One of my main aims is to break the walls of hate that have been built between the Hindus and Muslims.

Bangaru Laxman, president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, has welcomed Muslims to join the BJP. What do you think of this?

The question is who drove the Muslims away. The BJP distanced us. We were pushed away by them. They got rid of us to come to power. All these years, the secular fabric of India prevented them from gaining power. So they created an atmosphere of hate in the name of religion to get Hindu votes and succeeded in coming to power. They used the name of Lord Ram. That Lord Ram who never fought with the Muslims. That Lord Ram who never preached hate and intolerance.

The BJP — in the name of Lord Ram — walked over the dead bodies of innocent Muslims killed in the riots and came to power. They whipped up a hate campaign to help themselves. The walls of hate were so high that they spun out of control. Now, even secular Hindus are moving away from the BJP for they realise that what is happening is not what the religious scriptures told them. The BJP now remembers Muslims as elections are not far away.

Is it only because of elections?

What use are Muslims for? How else can they use Muslims? It is only for elections. All parties have used them. When the secular Hindus started moving away, they turned again to the Muslims. In order to bring them closer, they will have to do something for the Muslims. When you feed pigeons, they don’t just come and attack the grain. They watch carefully and try to figure out whether they are going to be fed or whether a trap is being laid.

The Muslims understand what the new BJP offer is all about. They listen to their heart beats now and ask one question: Was December 6, 1992 a proud or shameful day for India when the Babri Masjid was broken down? We want Bangaru Laxman to answer this. After the BJP answers this, we will decide.

Sometime back, Home Minister, L K Advani, had asked Indian Muslims to come out into the open to fight Pakistan. You were clearly upset then.

Why did he just ask Muslims to come forward? Do we have to prove any loyalty? Is there any instance when we have turned our backs on India? Has Advani and his government given us a chance to fight for India? Why are Muslims not given jobs in the army? Not even two per cent of the jawans are Muslims. Give us an opportunity and we will show how we can die fighting for India. Have Muslims not sacrificed in the wars? Have not Muslims contributed anything towards India? Everywhere we are discriminated against. In jobs. In education. In everything.

RSS chief K S Sudershan has called upon Indian Muslims to Indianise themselves.

Bangaru wants Muslims to get close (to the BJP) and Sudershan says Muslims must Indianise themselves. Islam is an universal religion. You cannot confine it to one area. Do you call a Muslim living in America as an American Muslim or do you call him an American citizen? If a Hindu lives in Jordan, do you call him a Jordanian Indian or an Indian? A Muslim cannot be forced to follow different customs in different parts of the world.

Sudershan was saying that Indonesian Muslims observe festivals like Durga Puja and Diwali and also have a mixture of Hindu and Muslim names.

I do not know what they do in Indonesia. But you cannot tell Muslims how to live and what to do and how to follow Islam.

What is this new party for India’s Muslims that you want to start?

Why is there so much of a controversy about this? There can be a Hindu party. There can be a Sikh party. But there cannot be a Muslim party. Muslims have always been taken for granted. They have only been used by political parties. At least the BJP is openly against the Muslims. But what did secular parties like the Congress do after Independence for the Muslims? What did the so called secular parties like the Janata Party and the Janata Dal do for us? Mulayam Singh won only because of the Muslim vote and what did he do for the community? He threw his weight behind Sakshi Maharaj who was one of those who helped in the demolition of the Babri Masjid. And he threatened the Muslims openly. Muslims were ignored by each party. When the question of social justice arose, Muslims were not counted.

We were talking of the Muslim party you were starting.

It has created a flutter. Let the other political parties now realise that we can get political power if we want. I do not say that a Muslim party is going to be a magic wand, but at least it can force Parliament to discuss issues that Muslims want like education and jobs. We are not here just to cast our votes and then suffer till the next election. And then again cast votes hoping for change. I told Muslims to remove their crutches and walk on their feet and become a political power.

When are you going to start the new party?

In January, I plan to call Muslim leaders from every state to decide what the party should be called and how to go about forming it.

You will then become an all-India Muslim leader when you do this.

I have not ever called myself a leader. If I speak the truth before the Muslims, they will accept it. I will speak against injustice. Talking against the government is not talking against the country.

What is the problem with Indian Muslims?

I tell the Muslims that they must be united. At the moment, they are divided and clash with each other. This has made them weak. I tell Muslims to become a force and defeat political parties. We must stop feeling like a defeated community. We must make political parties recognise our strength. Only then can we get what we want.

Do you have any political ambitions?

None. I am happy where I am. I do not want to reach a stage where I am folding my hands in front of everyone and lowering my head before anyone. For 400 years, we have been in the Masjid. Morarji Desai offered to make my father the vice-president. I got numerous offers to be made a member of Parliament. But I am happy in the masjid.

Your father, the earlier Shahi Imam, wanted to be seen as a leader.

He never wanted to be a leader. I am also like him.

Of late, Muslims have often been labelled anti-Indian or pro-Pakistan.

It is an absolutely baseless allegation. How can anyone say this? I do not understand. Muslims shed their blood for the Independence of this country. They have also sacrificed. This is an absolute lie. Mosques are supposed to be ISI centres. Madarssas are called ISI centres. Muslims have always been with India. I did not talk to the government about peace in Kashmir. I spoke to Kashmiri leaders, Hizbul chief Syed Salahuddin and militant leaders to secure peace during Ramzan. I want peace in Kashmir. I want the bloodshed to stop. Why should I do it if I or Muslims are pro-Pakistan? As far as Kashmir is concerned, we are clear that we are not at all sympathetic with Pakistan.

What will ultimately happen in Kashmir?

There has to be peace. Either today or twenty years later, talks will have to happen. But first, the peace process has to start. Let us look at it this way. At least now we are talking about peace.

What about the prime minister’s offer for ceasefire during Ramzan?

Let us see. I think it is difficult to work it out without Pakistan’s consent.

Will India and Pakistan enjoy the fruits of peace someday?

Absolutely. People of both countries want peace. It has to happen. We must admit that Atal Bihari Vajpayee tried to do a lot. We cannot take the credit away from him of taking a bus to Lahore.

If you were to draw a blueprint for Indian Muslims, how would you draw it?

Well, the first thing as I said is unity. Muslims need to be brought together. Different sects fight against each other. After ruling India for 900 years, Muslims today live like slaves. The reason is that the community has been delivered slow poison. Muslims now have to ask themselves what they want. Political power is very important. Only then can they bargain for reservation in education and jobs. There are school text books today that are spreading the message of hate underlining that Muslims had oppressed the Hindus. We need to change our thinking today. Hindus and Muslims must protect each other. Only then will India emerge with a new strength. And both Hindus and Muslims will be strong communities.

The VHP has now said it is determined to build the temple in Ayodhya.

They can say what they like. If there is a law in this country, is it not for the VHP too? We are saying we will respect the decision of the court. But the VHP says the court cannot decide and they will do what they like. Is the Constitution only for Muslims and not the VHP?

Is there some solution to the Babri Masjid issue? Or will it simmer on and on?

The government must have special courts and speedy day-to-day hearings. Otherwise, it will continue for years.

Who would you say is a Muslim leader who has an acceptance all over India?

(Smiles) Well, I do not know. I cannot say. The Muslims know who their leader is. You should know.

What do you think of the Muslim leadership in India?

We have sarkari Muslim leaders who have no eyes as they cannot see what is happening to their community. They have no tongue to speak and fight for the Muslims. We kick this kind of leadership. Then there were others who could have done something but they are either dead or are too old. We need a younger lot now. We need leaders who are committed like Kanshi Ram and Mayawati who did a lot for their community when in power. Muslim leaders are more interested in power, bettering their personal and family interests.

When will someone pull Indian Muslims out of the typical ghetto, give them better education, give them a wider worldview and work to mobilise them into a modern flourishing community?

Maybe a Muslim party can do it. No government or political party has yet done this.

Why have Muslims not taken to education?

No government has been interested in educating Muslims. And the Muslim leadership has not been able to convince the government about the importance of educating Muslims. Will the BJP do something to spread education among Muslims? They want us to get close them!

Muslim leaders are often accused, even within the community, that they are responsible for the plight of Muslims today. It is felt that the Muslim leadership will rather have illiterate Muslims so that they can follow them blindly.

That is not true. Schools and colleges are not ready to accept Muslims. Many of them just get rejected. Let anybody deny it and I will send thousands of Muslims to them for admission. Muslims want to study and do well. Muslims must be given reservation in schools and colleges.

What do you think about the equality of women? Why have they not been allowed to pray with men?

Again, not true. Here in theJama Masjid, women come for prayers. We do not stop women. It is just that in most small places, women themselves do not go to the mosque. If they want to pray, no one stops them. This is just false propaganda.

Why do we not have leaders like you funding films like Salim langde me pat ro? It might help non-Muslims to understand Muslims better and also for Muslims to understand their tragedy.

Everyone knows the tragedy that Muslims are caught up in.

Your critics say your father refashioned the phrase from Imam of Shahi Juma Masjid to Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid during the Emergency when he was arrested.

When the Masjid was made in 1656, Shah Jehan made two announcements. One was that the Imam would come from one family — generation after generation. He appointed Syed Abdul Ghafoor Shah Bukhari as the first Imam. Then onwards it has been his descendents. The second announcement was that the king will now be crowned by the Shahi Imam.

Why do you say that Muslims are insecure?

Muslims are given a feeling of security before elections. They are given all kinds of assurances. After the elections, the promises are not kept and they are left high and dry. Naturally, they feel unwanted and insecure. In numerous places like Meerut and Moradabad, Muslims were killed by police atrocities. And there was no government to protect them. Naturally, they will feel insecure. When Muslims come out into the streets to protest against such injustice, they are labelled as mulk ka gaddar (unpatriotic).

What does your father, Abdullah Bukhari, do today? He was seemingly upset when he handed over charge.

He is resting. He has been the Shahi Imam for 52 years. If he cried during the ceremony, it was only because he was happy. They were tears of joy. He felt sentimental seeing his son take over from him.

Basically, your role is just to lead the prayer. You cannot give fatwas or ask the community to vote for a particular party. The Khutba prayer meeting should really be a religious address by you every Friday. But every Friday, you stray into politics.

Khutba means a speech. But it need not necessarily be a religious speech. One part of it is purely religious. But the other can be on any current issue. I am just following my religious duty of informing the Muslim community of what is happening around.

Why did your father call himself an ISI agent? He dared the government to arrest him?

It must be understood in the right perspective. Every Muslim was being called an ISI agent. My father said that if his community is full of ISI agents, he being their leader made him the biggest ISI agent.

Bengaluru blast was not aimed at BJP office: Intel

Bengaluru: The low intensity blast at 10.20am on Wednesday on the Temple Street in Malleswaram – was meant to create panic and was not meant to target the BJP office as is being made out, said a top Intelligence source.

“The explosive – ammonium nitrate – strapped to a Tamil Nadu registered motorbike parked in between two Maruti omni vans – was locally procured and crudely put together in a hurry,” a senior intelligence officer said. The bike, the vans, a Santro car and the KSRP van parked nearby were badly damaged after the fuel tank in one of the cars caught fire.

“The criminals used petrol-driven cars as a shield and the IED was reportedly triggered by a remote timer device because no wires were found at the site of the explosion. The shock waves rattled the buildings in the vicinity, shattering glass windows and doors. The explosion was meant more to create panic than to kill or seriously injure people,” a top Intelligence source told Deccan Chronicle.

He added that it maybe too early to establish it was a “terror” attack. “There’s been no Intelligence input, no alerts, no intercepts, mails or calls to verify this as a terrorist attack. The blast site is not a crowded place,” the officer added.

B’lore: Is LeT targetting politicos? Bangalore, April 13: Is the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) behind the Bangalore blast of Wednesday? Some sources suggested that the LeT could be active and planning to target the political leadership in the BJP-ruled state, which is due to go to the polls on May 5. Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) has asked the Karnataka government, particularly the police, to take all possible measures to ensure that the May 5 polls are not disrupted. The EC said this in the wake of the blast outside the BJP headquarters here on Wednesday, which had left 16 people injured. Deputy Election Commissioner Alok Shukla, in-charge of the assembly polls, said the Commission had received information that the blast was an act of terror, according to one report. Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar appealed to the media to maintain calm and not politicise the blast issue. He said the police were investigating the matter and were assisted by the central agencies. He said the details would be known soon. The CM also said the government will take care of the loss of property caused in the blast and promised compensation. The NIA and NSG were examining the blast site. A national news channel had on Wednesday reported that the Karnataka police had got an alert from intelligence agencies about a potential attack in Bangalore ahead of the elections. Though it was reported later that the alert was a general one and did not specify the target of the attack.

Police looking for suspect near Chennai – S. Vijay Kumar
    The Hindu dated 18-04-2013

Special teams of the Tamil Nadu police are hunting for a suspect involved in the Bangalore explosion near Chennai. Investigators tracking the owner of the motorcycle used to trigger the blast headed to Kancheepuram late on Wednesday night on the lookout for a youth, sources in the State intelligence said.

Though the registration number on the motorcycle was found to be a fake one, the police traced its owner with the help of the engine number.

Since the details of ownership were not available with the Transport department, police went to the motorcycle manufacturing company in Hosur where they got the dealer’s address and subsequently the buyer’s.

The two-wheeler was registered in the name of R. Prakash of Kattabomman Street in New Perungalathur near here.

When the police reached there, Prakash claimed that he had sold his motorcycle to a person from Kancheepuram a few months ago.

“We have information that the person hails from Vellore. But the address found in the driving licence referred to Kancheepuram, which could be either fake or temporary … the vehicle remains in the name of Prakash,” a senior police official told The Hindu. Hours after a bomb went off in Malleshwaram area in Bangalore, policemen from Karnataka landed in Chennai and reportedly conducted an inquiry in the house of a software engineer in Nanganallur. They quizzed the family of the techie in connection with a motorcycle, bearing a Tamil Nadu registration number, that was allegedly used for the blast on Wednesday. The Chennai City Police, meanwhile, issued an alert following the incident.

Police sources said that a team from Karnataka rushed to Chennai and held inquiries with the officials of the Regional Transport Office at Alandur to ascertain the owner of the motorbike having the registration number TN 22 R 3796. Sources said that the Karnataka police had recovered the number plate from the motorcycle at the blast site.

The vehicle was alleged to have been used to strap the explosive that exploded opposite BJP office in Malleshwaram.

With inputs from the RTO officials, the police team went to the house of a 45-year-old software engineer, Sundar, in Thillai Ganga Nagar, Nanganallur, police sources said. They added that the engineer’s father Sankaranarayanan, who was at home, reportedly told the police that his son had bought a Yamaha RX100 2-stroke motorcycle in 1990 and sold it five years ago. Police sources said that the motorbike recovered from the blast site was of different make – a Suzuki Samurai.

Meanwhile, the city police were put on high alert. Police said they have increased the security cover for political party offices, shopping malls and temples in particular.

A Government Railway Police (GRP) official said anti-sabotage checks were being carried out at the Central Railway Station. “Entries to the railway station is limited and additional personnel are posted for security,” the officer added. A Railway Protection Force (RPF) officer claimed that there was no specific threat for railway stations in Chennai.

Centre says Indian Mujahideen’s Bhatkal could be behind Bangalore blast
Bharti Jain & Vishwa Mohan, TNN |
    Apr 18, 2013, 01.36 AM IST
    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bangalore/Centre-says-Indian-Mujahideens-Bhatkal-could-be-behind-Bangalore-blast/articleshow/19605445.cms

NEW DELHI: Echoing the assessment that Wednesday’s Bangalore blast was a terror strike, the Union home ministry pointed to an Indian Mujahideen (IM) signature in targeting crowds gathered at the BJP office for ticket distribution ahead of May 5th Karnataka election.

The similarities with earlier terror blasts carried out by IM like IEDs strapped to two-wheelers as well as suspected use of nitrate-based explosives and shrapnel point to how the homegrown terror outfit remains a thorn in India’s flesh. In fact, the Central security establishment are suspecting that the IM operatives on the run and also wanted for the 7/11 Mumbai and Hyderabad blasts – Yasin Bhatkal, Waqas, Tabrez and Bada Sajid – could be behind the latest Bangalore strike as well.

As per preliminary reports shared with the home ministry, the site of Wednesday’s explosion, which comes a couple of days after conviction of Mirza Inayat Baig in the German Bakery blasts case in which IM’s bomb-maker Yasin Bhatkal too is an accused, was around 40 metres from the BJP office and 100 metres away from the nearby Kadu Malleswara temple.

The fact that ticket distribution at the BJP office over the last few days had been attracting huge crowds was possibly known to the bombers. “It was to target these crowds and inflict maximum casualty that the terrorists chose to strike at the BJP office in the midst of the state polls,” a senior MHA official said adding that, fortunately, the ticket distribution had ended by Wednesday morning, leading to a leaner gathering at the ruling party’s office. “This prevented heavy casualties,” said the official.

The latest explosion at the BJP’s office in poll-bound Karnataka capital is reminiscent of a similar blast in 2011 at the Congress headquarters in Guwahati, also in the run-up to the assembly polls in Assam. The Guwahati blast, which only caused injuries, was allegedly carried out by Paresh Barua faction of the outlawed Ulfa.

With a motorcycle, two-wheeler and two cars having caught fire, the NSG’s forensic experts and NIA teams, which reached Bangalore from Delhi and Hyderabad, are trying to ascertain exactly where the bomb was planted as well as its chemical composition. Most likely, MHA sources said, the bomb was strapped on to the motorcycle, which, incidentally, is a known modus operandi of the IM.

Stating that the IM module behind the Hyderabad blasts had been identified, an MHA official did not rule out the involvement of missing members of the same module in the planning and execution of the Bangalore blast. Imran and Maqbool, the IM duo, who had reconnoitered Dilsukhnagar ahead of Hyderabad blasts, were arrested from Bangalore, which boasts of a good penetration of both LeT and IM operatives.

Sources said Yasin Bhatkal, who has successfully dodged the security agencies on his trail, is known to volunteer to plant the bomb himself. “He is suspected to have planted the bomb that caused the twin blasts at Gokul Chat Bhandar and Lumbini Park in Hyderabad, and at the German Bakery in Pune in 2010…there is a possibility that his adventurous streak may have led him to plant the bomb at Bangalore as well,” the official said.

Bangalore has seen four terror strikes so far, starting with the attack on Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in 2005, the 2008 serial blasts, the Chinnaswamy Stadium explosions and now the blast at Malleshwaram.

MHA sources conceded that there was no prior intelligence regarding terrorists’ plans to attack Bangalore. A senior MHA official ruled out sending additional forces to poll-bound Karnataka, saying that enough Central security personnel had been put at the state’s disposal for election deployment. “These can be redeployed to enhance security at vulnerable spots,” the official added.
